What rods were used in a ZZZ crate engine? I disassembled mine quite a while back now and seem to be missing one rod cap.......I have seen rods listed as the replacement for the old "pink" rods pn 10108688. Is this what was used or were they actually the old style "pink" rods? I think my engine
was produced in about 89 or 90.

I don't know about the original ZZZ series but the later versions of this crate engine used the PM rods, I believe.
At least the ZZ3 shortblock I had did, IIRC.

The ZZZ used forged "pink" rods #14096846. The PM (powdered Metal) ones #10108688 didn't come along until the ZZ3. In May '03, GM superceded the part number from the pink one to the PM one. You should be able to get one for about $60 or less from a dealer. Depending on where you are in OH, Jim Pace in Niles should have them.

According to some of my info the zz3 had both the forged steel "pink" rod while some had the forged PM rods.

Also the zzz - zz3 had forged steel cranks while the zz4 has a LT4 nodular iron with rolled fillets cranks.

Some of the early ZZ4 motors came with the nodular crank, but they went to a forged shortly after it was released. The first design uses the nodular iron part number 12551485, and the second design (ZZ4's built after Nov. 98) have the forged steel crank 12556307. The only rod I see listed for the ZZZ as original is P.N. 14096846 like stated above.

You are correct on the rod and crank. The rod number changed designs, and the part number was superceded at about the same time.

It is also funny how the ZZ4 crate engine gets a non-forged, but the ZZ4 partial gets a forged crank... All the hotter crate engines also got the forged one.
