A clone is, for example, a Malibu that is rebuilt to look and function as close to a Chevelle SS as possible.

A fake is the same thing, only the owner/seller represents it as a true SS.

A tribute is also the same, only the owner is honest enough to tell people what it really is.

Um, those are my interpretations, anyway. ;)

Oh boy.. this will be fun :)

In sum..all are the same.. just language which for some makes it easier.. softens the blow.

I can CLONE a Malibu into looking like a SS

I can then say it was my TRIBUTE to the almighty SS which sounds nice..

OR

I can take something like a Malibu and make it look like a real SS and FAKE all the Documents, and Restamp the numbers on the important parts.. and end up with a CLONE/Tribute.. it's all Language... and some will say the FAKE is the Guy who restamps and replicates paperwork, while the Clone Just LOOKS the part without changes to TRIM TAG or engine numbers and paperwork...

whatever makes you feel good I say.

Next....

to me, it breaks down like so:

Fake: a car that has been made to look like something that it isn't and is passed off as the real deal.

Tribute: a car that has been made to look like something that is isn't but there is no attempt to mislead others about the true identity of the car and it would be almost impossible to tell the difference between a *tribute* car and the real deal.

Clone: at one time this word meant the same as tribute. an owner/builder built the car to look like something it isn't but you would be hard pressed to tell the difference. Now this term has been used so much that, to me, it means nothing. you see so many cars out there claiming to be an SS clone, but all the owner has done was put SS badges on the car. IMHO you cant put SS badges on your 307 powered/TH350/10 bolt 69 malibu with full malibu trim and call it a 69 Chevelle SS *clone*

I've seen people put 'SS' badges on their Chevy Colorado pickups. (aren't those inline 5 cyl / automatics?). What's with these people...

Need something to dress up those ugly "chiseled from a big rock and fell into the canyon" trucks.

Then, there is the guy who just does the car up the way he wants. He doesn't claim that it is a fake, clone, tribute or anything else. It's just his car and he is enjoying it while everyone gets their panties in a knot. Like Dave, I like the "what if" cars. A friend has a very nice '69 Chevelle stationwagon. It's all done the way GM would have done it, if they had made an SS396 wagon. It is NICE.

"Tribute" is Barrett-Jackson speak for "clone" so the seller can still get top dollar for a non-original car. :D

On a side note, with all the "cloning" going on nowadays, am I the only one who automatically trys to see whats incorrect on claimed SS cars? :D

Don't know why, but seeing that most EVERY car at a show seems to be an SS (allegedly), I can't help but be skeptical.:p
