Hope you guys can give me some ideas on whats going on. Went to the track last weekend and made 3 good passes, the fourth time out & the 5th, when I shifted from 1st to 2nd, I came up on the rev limiter, but only for an instance, then it settled, hit 3rd and went through the traps. Lost some Et, but not much. Shifting @ 7,000, rev limiter comes on @ 7,600. I though I was loosing 2nd gear, but drove it around the pit area and it seemed fine, pulled the tranny pan all good there. Any idea's?? Converter? Tranny?

I wouldn't think converter, that should do it in every gear. I would think second gear is going in the trans. Driving around the pits doesn't load the trans the same. It may be just starting to slip or get worse under load.

I take it you are using a TH400 or TH350???

What kind of shifter do you use?

Check your shifter linkage VERY carefully. Put the shifter in each gear and verify the position of the shift lever on the trans closely. Make sure it lines up in every gear. Helps to have a buddy or you will be getting up and down a bunch ;)

If that isn't it, you may have busted a sprag.

How do you do your burnout?

Guys, thanks for the reply, not really sure what it is. Went to the track this weekend, its not coming up on the rev limiter like I thought, its more like its spinnin just for a mili second when shifting, maybe its normal for this trans (th 400), it just has never done that before. Maybe its goin away. We ran our best this weekend, so its screwn up consistantly, best ever 60 foot times back to back 1.30 w/a 9.55 & a 9.56 Et @140 mph, of course I went red first round again!!

The 60' is definitely a step in the right direction. I would plan on having the trans looked at this winter, if it makes it.
yea, 60's went from a 1.42 to 1.30, was hooking hard. I think this winter we are going to change it out to a powerglide. Sure would make it easier to drive down the track. We are going out next weekend for the last time this year, hope it makes it. Any suggestions on someone who makes a good powerglide?

We are using a Hurst Pistol grip, yea it would'nt hurt to check the cable, we checked it last week for any damage or kinks, was good, but did'nt check the gear position. Burns outs are good, no problem there, using all 3 gears.

Jason,

Thanks for the reply, had a buddy help me with the shifter cable, found that when we hit 3rd the lever was hitting the trans shield, so took the grinder to it (just a hair out) and re-checked, could'nt pull the cable out without pressure (came out before the grinding perfect) checked all gears was out almost an 1/8th inch off each gear. We re-adjusted the cable so it would slide in and out without any resistance on all gears. Made it to the track this weekend for a test, ran a 9.51 @142 mph w/a 0.005 light, each shift was solid, what a great feeling! I almost like this th400 now!
Thanks for the lead, you were right on!:hurray:

nothing like covering the basics. There's a lot of guys out there running 3/4 or 7/8 throttle with the pedal on the floor.

Jason/Tom, thanks for the reply, its been a real learning experience for us this year, 1st mid 9 sec car we have owned, (fastest before was a 12 sec) had to re-learn everything from fuel to suspension, tires, tune up's, delay box, even replaced the trans brake button, we were so green at the start of the year , our first run we ran out of methanol in the burn out box! Had to be towed all the way back to the pits! Our next run we went too fast as had to leave. (needed a license and NHRA cert.) But we had a great year and was truly a blast! Thanks for the reminders to cover tha basic's first, sometimes in a rush the most simple things are over looked.
