Welding cast aluminum

796 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  gnicholson
My brother has a dirt bike with a crack near the oil drain plug. the previous owner must have been confused when loosening the drain bolt since it is upside down. This is casusing a leak and the bolt can't be tightened much.

So how to you properly fix this area? Weld it up? Should it be dissasembled before welding? Any preheating on the cast aluminum?

Thanks

Cleaned and preheated. Smoke the part with acetylene soot untill black, then with a neutral flame heet untill all soot is burned off. That is the proper temp for welding. Aluminum MUST be totally clean to weld.
I take it the motor should be disassembled? I'd rather not if possible.
My buddy had kinda the same issue, and the local motorcycle repair shop, fixed it for him for like 40.00 dollars.

What kind of shop? The ones I have worked at in the past would tell the customer to buy a new casing, since they did not have any welding equipment. I will have my brother call around since $40 is cheap.
