I thought I had seen it all pretty much, that is until what I just saw on FOX News! Cows laying on water beds! That's right! They are making waterbeds for cows! The farmer says the cows give more milk since going to these beds!
I guess it is all good! Maybe even better for a cow!:D

There have been comfort mats for dairy cows to lay on for a long time.Well proven, the better you treat a dairy cow,she will give more milk. Also, mainly their diet.Feed'em good ensilage and they'll really crank out the milk.A good dairy cow is a long term investment (up to 15 years),like any other business.Take care of them and they'll take care of you.

I made a Cat bed for a cow once. When I was 10 yrs old on the farm in Wisconsin the cat had kittens in the barn. So I cut up a box put some bedding in it and put the kittens it in. Later that night a cow wondered into the stall and laid down on top of the box. Then I injured my foot when I got mad and kicked it. Don't think it helped with milk production either.

Oops, guess I had something else on my mind.

We've fooled around with every kind of freestall bed that's come around the last 20 years. The "waterbed" started out as a pillow filled with recycled chipped rubber, but the rubber migrated to form lumps and the fabric cover would make lesions at the lump site. About 8-10 years ago they tried water which doesn't migrate, but they still have a long way to go getting the fabric right. Our ladies get creek run sand about a foot deep. Soft and comfortable and grows no bacteria. Hard on the bucket cutting edges and manure eqpt though...
