Finally have everything rounded up to screw together my first big block - the last piece of the puzzle was a 'girlie' cam from CStraub :hurray:. Here is a list of my junk, including the head flow #'s:

GM 2 bolt 454 block, +.060" (a '78 model GMC 3/4 ton truck block)
GM cast crank, ARP studs
3/8" truck rods, ARP wavelocs
SRP forged pistons, 23cc small dome .005" in the hole
Mahle rings, Melling hv pump
Edelbrock Marine RPM Oval ports (mild port and bowl blend), 2.25"/1.89" valves, 290cc runners, head surfaced cleaned up, chambers cc'd at 109, ARP head bolts, Fel Pro .039" gasket
Crower 68363 springs (194#/560#)
Cloyes hex-a-just timing set
Morel lifters, c straub hyd roller cam
Crane aluminum roller rockers
Eddy RPM air gap, port matched, 1" phenolic open spacer
Holley 870sa carb (I know most of you hate these)
Hedman Elite 1 3/4 long tube headers
I don't have a distributor yet, was thinking of using a Davis HEI, would like opinions on this, or any other setup to fire this thing off.

Compression will be right about 10.8:1, cam specs are 245/248 @ .050", 301/306 @ .006", .646/.603 lift, 107/101
Head #'s good/bad intake, exhaust with 2"x6" pipe
.2 159.5 152 136
.3 224 217 167
.4 276 270 194
.5 314.5 281 222
.6 331 289 246
.7 320 295 264
Flowed on a Superflow 1020 at 28"

I hope to have it all together and dyno'd sometime in April. I'd like to hear opinions and horsepower/torque estimates!

Re: Wanna bash my 468" squishy combo?

Adam that combination is very similar to one my buddy is putting together right now. Can't wait to see how it runs.

461 BBC 2 bolt
10.5 to 1
brodix 294's
Rpm air gap
850 dp
244/244...hyd roller 612 lift 110 lsa
2"x3.5" Headers
TH400...3500 stall
4.10 gear
28" dr

Hoping for 11.3-11.4 range.

Contrary to what many think, those heads seem to perform well when used with a narrow split in duration. I've ran the 870SA quite successfully prior. Most consistent complaint will be the timing of the secondaries as the rpms come up. 2500 rpm and lower, transition is smooth, get to 3000 or above before you load it and it's hard to get a quick enough opening without a bog.

That's gonna be a rowdy cam for sure.

I would think that combination should make about 570-580hp.
That's right around what I was hoping for, with strong low/mid torque to get my '69 swb truck outta the hole.

Yeah, it will probably have a little 'hit' at idle :D. Actually, I was kinda surprised when I pulled out the cam card and saw that 245/248, but I trust Chris' expertise and that is what he decided on, so I'm good with it. With the parts I have, he suggested a 6200-6300 rpm power peak, and I'll be shifting at around 6500.

I'm super excited to get this thing running, especially after seeing what his cams have done in other people's engines on this forum, like CrazyDavey for example. I have a TKO500 with carbon fiber synchros and a 12 bolt truck rear stuffed with 3.73's, Moser goodies and and Eaton posi. On the street I'll be running 335/30/18 rears (26" tall), and probably run 345/30/18 MT dr's at the track.

Anybody have some ideas on an ignition setup for this deal? I'm leaning toward a Performane Distributors D.U.I. setup at this point, but I am open to suggestions. Thanks for any help!

It to bad this is not a solid roller so your buddy could prove a point. Brodix heads do not work well with single pattern cams. If he had las adjustment he prove this to himself. He will be leaving at least 40HP on the table and a narrow powerband.

I remember you telling me that Chris. I think he gonna stick with the cam...maybe he could run an 1.8 rocker on the exhaust???

My guess, 570ish hp @ 6000 and 580ish tq @4000 with that carb and headers.

I would go straight to a DOT slick for the track rather than spend money on the drag radials. It's going to be a challenge to get it to hook. My engine's actual uncorrected hp/tq at the track, in the car, is around 420/440 and I needed a slick to get it to work. I just don't know if it's worth spending the money on drag radials for racing. If that was the tire you were going to use all of the time, then okay.

That's going to be an awesome ride! Great build.

Based on Brodix's I/E ratio he will need around 10 degree split. Changing rocker will only increase duration by 1 to 1.5 degrees.
What about adding duration with lash changes?

I would love to know if this thread has merit as far as the lash tuning goes.... I know most suggest the poster was questionable in his knowledge...

To the OP... you will be happy with Chris' cam. He knows them damn things...:beers:

Chris, I'd like to see what kinda power you can pull out of a stock-ish 454 with a roller cam. Talking your typical low-perf truck 454 with cast pistons, ~8:1. I mean, if GM can get a 454HO to make ~425-450HP/500ftlbs with 8.75:1 and a 211/230 HR cam, bet you can crack close to 500hp.

lift is in fact, .646" on the intake. As for the hwy cruising, with the short tires I have (26"), my cruise rpm at 65-70mph is just above 2000rpm. I can always run it in 4th below that speed, and with the 3.73's it won't be screaming too bad.

I wont bash Straubs roller cam but rather state Crane Cams recomended 244-248 @50 and .632 - .632 on a 108 some 11 years ago for GM 502 - 450hp crate. With the right tail wind 10.50 @ 127. They work and after 11 years came out last winter ready for new home. Good luck and your lucky to have Straub to help you.

Not too far off what Chris spec'd for me - but a 10.50 at 127 is SMOKIN'! My truck will probably never see that, but I'd be happy with 11.7's when I get this thing dialed in.
