Just throwing this out for honest opinions.

Since a '72 SS454 can be verified through the VIN#, does a buildsheet add any value to a non numbers matching SS? If you were looking to buy a "W" code and all things being equal, would a buildsheet matter to you & would you pay more for a car with one as opposed to one without?

Other than being able to look at the sheet and see what factory options are still with the car, I'm thinking it leans more to the side of being a novelty.

Opinions from others?

I would think it would just because it is verification. VINs can, and are, swapped. The buildsheet will also have pertinent information that should match the trim tag on any 72 Chevelle - at least lending credence the buildsheet is for that car. How much it might or might not add would be up to the buyer and seller.

beauty of a '72, nice but not necessary. Anything can be faked but a build sheet is more likely than a vin ....JMO

Thanks for the feedback fellas. I guess any legitimate documentation is a good thing. Although, I am a little disappointed in that an "expert" informed me that the sheet I found on top the tank cannot possibly be real. Said the condition was far too good... I thanked him for his opinion & told him to move on.

If you want to find out whether or not your build sheet is real, post it here in the Tag Team section. The guys here will let you know what you have.

I found the build sheet for my 72 W code in the rear seatback springs. It was hanging out quite a ways and there was a huge mouse nest right next to it. I couldn't believe my eyes. All of this building material so close and the mice never even nibbled on it. With the exception of some light rust marks from the springs, the sheet is absolutely perfect.

The mice did however eat about 3/4 of the second build sheet that was stuffed in the rear seat springs. Needless to say I was pretty surprised to see 2 build sheets in almost the exact same place, I was lucky the mice had their fill of the first one.

As others have already said, the nice thing about 72's is the VIN tells all, but having extra documentation is like having small pieces of history included with your car. My W code has the complete original drive train, dealer invoice, POP, window sticker, copy of the original title, and the 1.25 build sheets (I haven't looked for any more) I found myself after purchasing the car. The original owner kept absolutely everything, including the instruction manual for the aftermarket 8 track player he installed on top of the transmission tunnel.

get hold of yourself Dan...:D...our Monte is a W code too....;)
OK don't look....:D

'72 W cars are special Dave because of that little letter, but they get a bad rap because of the NET hp rating, some people can't get past that...

so true Dan, but I have that little W in the vin and the original window sticker so while a build sheet would be nice (I haven't found one yet), I really don't need it. The motor is basically the same as a '71 LS5, just a different rating. Then again, add a few parts here and a few part there...who cares about ratings? :D

I believe my LS5 is making a couple more HP too. ;) (see sig)

I had posted a pic of it a few months ago. It's identical to the one I found in the seat springs, which DaleM had verified as authentic on ChevelleStuff.

The "expert" was just some guy at a local car show who proclaims to all within earshot that he is all knowing about classic Chevy's. My wife had suggested that I display the sheets as conversation pieces. That's just what I got!:boring:

That's very cool that the original owner kept all the docs intact as well as he did. Amazing. It might be worth your while to drop the tank sometime & have a look. Lots of guys have found sheets up there.

 Wow Paul, you think that Chevelle of yours has enough options? The original owner of my W code bought the car to race on the weekends, so the car is very spartan. I will have to post a pic of the build sheet in the tag team section sometime soon.

I wouldn't worry too much about car show experts, and I think I would always keep my build sheets at home for the local shows. While I'm sure some people enjoy seeing them, I'm not sure it's worth the risk, especially if all you are hearing is the BS from the "experts."

The tank will definitely come off at some point, the car was forced out of the original owners garage by the wife's new import car many years ago. The elements have taken their toll, but the car is all original and can be saved, and that is just what I intend to do.

I was under the impression that only the Atlanta built Chevelle's had the build sheet behind the door panel. My W code is a Kansas City built car. I did just pull a perfect build sheet off of the driver's side door panel of my 70 Malibu the other day. It is an Atlanta built car.

I don't think a build sheet would add much value to a W code although it would be nice to have. I like all original documents. I turned my W code upside down and never found a build sheet and it is from a plant that is usually easy to find.
