Someone local to me is selling a new case of 6 qts for an asking price of $45, would that hurt my new 489 that only has dyno time and maybe 5 miles on it ?, I'm using VR1 10w30 in it now and next change was planning on either Napa Dino 10w30 or same in syn, I'm using a roller cam BTW

I had to have my Engine Rebuilt in 2017, Roller Cam / Rockers by my Racer Mechanic's Engine Builder
after Breaking In the Engine my Racer Mechanic has used for 2 years 15W40 Brad Penn Racing syn
Changed every Spring
Last year 2020 he put in Valvoline Synthetic 15W40
Car runs Smooth and Quiet and at 180* Temps or less on the Hwy in the City &
at the Track doing Back to Back runs down the 1/4 Mile

Oil can only work if it gets to where it is needed. Thick oil causes damage unless you are always above 80F. I can buy VR1 on Amazon for 42 bucks in 10w30 or 10w40 for higher temperature climates. Multi-viscosity is always better unless you are on a track. Also you do not need a high zinc oil with a roller cam.

Wish this guy on CL had this up before the dyno I would've used it for break in, think I'm going to pass and stick with a multi grade for my climate, I would've sworn my Howards Max Effort (Gatermen) lifters said use 10w30 but now I can't find the inst. sheet & it's not on Gatermens website, might try syn 10w40 for the next change

If you think a good pressure additive package is not needed for a roller cam you have been thinking wrong.
Those roller bearings in a roller lifter take a beating.
I see a lot of failed factory roller cams and I feel most of it is poor choice in oil or poor maintenance.

The VR1 is clingy oil and works very well I run it in my V8's with flat tappets or rollers.
A little bit more money for it maybe but I will not chance a failure to a lesser oil. Failure will cost you much more than
a little price difference.

Your call though.
I put too many miles on my vehicles to wonder if my oil choice was a good one.
Used to drive 70,000 miles a year now i am down to 30,000 and share that between 2 vehicles.
Not counting what the wife puts on the vehicles.
She did 67,000 miles in 11 months.

I need to get 300,000 miles minimum from my vehicles or it saddens me a little.

I'm just a little worried a straight weight oil would be a bad choice since it will be a little thick until the engine warms up? btw I agree about the roller bearings taking a beating and I also have a timing set with roller bearings on the backside, standard M77 pump with the dark colored spring

I'm thinking I'm either sticking with VR1 10w30 which is expensive or Mobile 1 10w30, price really isn't a big deal since it's not a DD car, when I bought a new Ram in '09, a new Harley crate engine in '06 both said to run 2.000 mi. using Dino oil before using syn. oil, Ram had a new owners meeting and Harley dealership owner and service dept. manager (friends) told me the same but the motor was broke in on a dyno so do I really need more miles on the motor? race engine shop owner told me the engine's broke in drive it like anything else, in fact he's going to give it the first trip down the local 1/8th mi. track soon

Mobil 1 10W-30 is $25 at Wal-Mart for a 5 Qt Jug. Can't beat the price and it is a great oil. I use the Mobil 1 15w-50 in my Big Block with flat tappet cam. The 15w-50 has high amounts of Zinc needed and I have the bearing clearances to use it. Lesser viscosity Mobil 1 does not have the zinc needed for flat tappets but would be good for your roller cam.

Im surprised no one has mentioned this... No synthetic oil until after about 3k miles.

You can use the VR1 straight 30wt just make sure you get some heat in the oil before you lean on it. You also might have a little more lifter noise at cold start until the oil come up to temp. This is assuming you’re in a warm climate... Someone said you live in the south so you should be good. In Florida we never have to worry about the cold lol

Old myth that needs to die. You can run mobil 1 on a fresh start up.

As for using straight 30, it wouldn't hurt a thing because you shouldn't be bashing on it until it's warm anyway.
