Hi, I just bought a 67 chevelle and it has a vinyl top I was wondering if you could remove the vinyl top and just paint it and it would be the same as a hard top? I'm just kicking the idea around incase that's what I want to do when it comes time to paint. Thanks guys.

Yes vinyl top can be removed. You will need to weld up the trim holes and finish the roof. Factory vinyl top cars did not get finished that well. Also, be prepared to deal with dents from having things layed on the roof - and rust and pitting. I took mine off, welded up the trim holes. then decided it was just too wavy to live with. So I am putting the roof back on after all. You'll have to decide at paint time.

Ya this is a tough one. I thought about removing mine, but I'm still torn about putting it back on. I have a little while before paint though. So I figure maybe by next spring I'll decide. Who knows it could be another 2 years from now as well.

In my opinion, the 69's look better with the vinyl top. The top and the trim complete the lines of the car. I am in the process of doing all my body work( new fenders, quaters, etc.) and I removed my top and I agree with GRN69CHV in that the vinyl top cars roofs were not finished too well and there were dents from people setting stuff on top of the car. I am planning on putting a new top back on anyways so I am getting the top as straight as I can before I install the new top. It wouldnt be too much work eliminate the top and paint it, so its all up to what you think looks better.

Another thing to consider is that two tone paint schemes seem to be in again. A vinyl top adds that dimension. My car's particular color (Frost Green) lends itself to a vinyl top, the color is not quite bold enough, whereas colors like red or black can carry off a solid paint color better -JMHO>
