Had my 65 ragtop shipped from northern Virginia to Kansas City, $800. Used National Auto Tranport and if they have closed, they deserve it. Told me it would be here in a week, it took 3 1/2 weeks. They hauled it all over the northeast picking up other cars.

We shipped my wife's 90 Mustang convert. (since replaced by an 05 copnvert.) from Illinois to Miami. The moving company sub contracted to Reindeer logistics, who subbed to a local carrier out of Rockford Ill who was an independent owner-operator (one rig, he drove it and the wife answered the phone). Reindeer was great, they kept us informed every step of the way, and really helped out when we when we had problems. The owner-operator was nice enough and really took care of the car, but he was the weak link. Reindeer kept up the pressure on him, you could tell he was stressed, but he did a good job.

It took four days to get it to Florida. He dropped and picked up cars all along the way. It took us three days to get to drive to Florida ourselves, so we really couldn't have handled him dropping off the car any sooner than he did. It was nice to know the car wasn't in the weather or on the road any longer than needed.

I don't exactly recall the price, but I think it was in the $1200-$1500 range. Although, the fact that this was subbed twice probably added to the cost since everyone got their cut. Anyway, it was good to always know where the car was, so I guess you get what you pay for.

Shipping a van is one thing. A collector car is another.

I've had two experiences with shippers. The first smashed a '63 Vette into a truck while unloading it. The second delivered a '67 Chevelle with a blown engine. There must be good ones out there, but I haven't met them.

There's lots of jerks out there in the shipping business. They'll damage your car, delay your delivery due to every excuse in the book.... but there are some good ones. One company I've had good luck with is Dependable Auto Shippers. They aren't the cheapest, but they do a decent job.
