I have a problem getting my tower computer (running XP Home) to recognize either of my Kingston USB ‘drives’. They both used to work, and they currently work just fine on my daughter’s computer. When I plug in either my 1 Gb or 2 Gb stick drives onto my computer I get "USB Device Not Recognized - One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem click this message".
When I click on it, a panel opens that shows USB Root Hub (6 ports), which expands into 5 Unused Ports and 1 Unknown Device. It directs me to reconnect the device; if it still doesn’t work, replace the device. Of course I’ve tried that 25 times with no success.
When I go into the troubleshooter I take all steps that they ask. Nothing solves the problem. When I go into Device Manager and right click on ‘Unknown Device’ I can see that no drivers are required for the device (it worked before and no drivers were required before to get my OS to recognize it before). I should mention at this point that I have tried all the different USB ports on my computer with the same result. My USB printer and my scanner both work just fine so I don’t want to mess with a driver for the USB port.
When I go into Device Manager and uninstall the Unknown Device, then from the Action tab select ‘Scan for hardware changes’ I get ‘Found New Hardware - USB Device’, ‘Found New Hardware – Unknown Device’, ‘Found New Hardware - Your new hardware is installed and ready to use’. It is still classed as an unknown device and I cannot see it when I go into ‘My Computer’ and look for the drive. Refreshing the window doesn’t help. I remove and reconnect the stick and again get "USB Device Not Recognized - One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem click this message". Oh brother, I’m going in circles.
If I scan for new hardware nothing comes up. If I try to install new hardware manually I don’t find it on the list. Before you suggest that it is incompatible, remember that both of them worked on this computer before without any problems. Device Manager does not show any exclamation marks beside any devices.
Let me mention that yesterday I was trying to install the drivers for my daughter’s Cannon Digital Rebel. After I was done I rebooted and turned on the camera, following the instructions to the letter. I could not get it to recognize the camera. I disconnected the camera and then uninstalled the entire camera drivers and applications using the Uninstall Wizard so that they would be removed properly. I tried numerous times yesterday but never got anywhere with it. I should mention that for years at work I was considered an excellent troubleshooter for hardware and software problems, so I understand the concepts just fine.
I have the System Restore function enabled, but to my horror I discovered that during the Digital Rebel fiasco yesterday my system dumped all the previous restore points (the OS needed the room in my system partition) so I can’t roll back to a point before all this BS. Nice.
Does anyone have any non-violent suggestions?
