I recently picked up another Chevelle after many years without one. I decided to venture out to the local salvage yards today to see what stuff I could find (boy I feel like a kid again!). I stumbled onto a '71 or '72 4-door 6-cylinder with this bolt-on "thing" hanging under the dash. It was a few inches high and pretty wide. The finish and vents somewhat resembled the Chevelle's dashboard look, but the right angle metal mounting brackets make me think it is not factory. It looks like there is a compressor under the hood, so I'm guessing the whole thing is an aftermarket A/C unit.
Has anyone seen one or got a clue about what it is? And more importantly perhaps, should I grab it and put it in my '70?

The aftermarket had universal a/c kits, and even GM offered dealer-installed kits. The GM kits said 'GM' on them and had the Chevy bow-tie emblem too!
