We went to a car 'museum' in Scottsdale yesterday trying to burn time until our next game started later in the afternoon and I saw a '69 Chevelle with a two tone paint job that looks like a vinyl top. They stated it was a rare option.... anyone hear of this? Just curious, I don't know a bunch about '69s.

Rare is a relative term and quite often overused. As Don noted, 21690 were ordered or about 5% of the models is was available on as opposed to say the vinyl top which was ordered on about 45% of the models it was available on.

Like Don, I think they're nice looking especially the campagne over brown. Only 6 choices were available in the U.S. http://chevellestuff.net/1969/paint.htm

I had a two-tone '70 SS396 as my first Chevelle. 55 10, Champagne Gold and a Classic White painted top. Hank is taking good care of it now... I believe there was somewhere around 23xxx D99 Two Tone paint cars built in 1970. There was, a long time ago, a couple 4-doors running around town that were two-tone, one Autumn Gold/White, and one Fathom Blue/White.

My '67SS was originally C-D paint code.
Ermine white with a Nantucket blue painted top.
Also has the "O" in the option codes.
I painted it a solid Torch Red 'cause that's what I wanted.
I sometimes think about painting it next go around back original.
Never seen another 67SS in that paint scheme.
Probably rare and would stand out in a crowd but just wasn't what I wanted at the time.
Anyone else seen one?

Dave, did that car have White stripes?
I can't speak for Dave, but I have a picture on my computer that I saved back in 2007 of an Autumn Gold with Classic White '70 SS396. It had white D88 stripes and ivory interior. The car also somehow had rocker moldings.

In the 1970s back in my hometown of Ancaster there was a 1970 Chevelle 300 Deluxe coupe (Canadian car) in Forest Green with a Green Mist roof and wheels (it had factory dog dish caps). I also remember a really clean 1970 Bel Air Sport Coupe in town in the 1970s that was Autumn Gold with a Gobi Beige roof & gold interior.

I'll be honest, I keep confusing the names of the gold 1970 colours. I know Champagne Gold is pale and the gold cars above were not Champagne Gold as far as I know.

As for the original question I would say that 2-tone paint was relatively rare at that time. Most people wanting contrast went instead with a vinyl roof cover (to the chagrin of restorers today.)

I bought a 1 owner 72 Chevelle bought and kept here in Tucson all it's life. It was and still is factory 2 tone. Most people from a distance think it's a vinyl top because it has the trim like a vinyl top would. The car is Mohave Gold and the top is Artic White even though it does need to be repainted. Still undecided if I want to go back to original color or not, I'm thinking more of a copper color with white top would look really nice.
