I have a problem with the turn signal in my 69 Chevelle and don't know exactly where to start tracking the problem. The hazards, brake lights, and turn signals all work. When I brake and have the left turn signal on it works too, but when I have the right turn signal blinking and hit the brake, only the right turn signal stays on until I let off the brake where it begins blinking again and the brake light on the right comes on again. If I have the hazards on and hit the brake all the lights, including the front turn signals just stay on also. I don't really know where to track the problem to. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

I'd check out the ground on the right rear signal/brake bulb. As a test, touch a piece of wire to the bulb base near where it meets the glass. Touch the other end of the test wire to a known good ground. If the bulb starts acting normal again, it's a bad ground to the bulb - bad ground wire, bad socket, poor connection.

ride_sbc,

I can't believe it - someone else from LaPorte!!! You may have seen me or my car before, I have a green 1971 chevelle that usually runs through town during the summer. I'm at school right now, but I live on Fail Rd and went to New Prairie. Shoot me an e-mail, I'd love to talk.

Also, I agree with John I had a similar problem and traced it to a bad ground - lots of weird stuff happens when you have bad grounds.

Hope to talk to you soon

Can't believe it either. Think there's a limit.

Without a doubt inadequate grounding can cause strange thing to happen. Like suggested check to make sure all, rear and front have good grounds. On 69s the socket grounds directly to the metal reflector, lator years used a black ground wire from the socket to a grounding screw. Also make sure the light sockets are free of corrosion.

It’s possible you have another problem. I don’t understand what lights are on/off when you say.

“but when I have the right turn signal blinking and hit the brake, only the right turn signal stays on until I let off the brake where it begins blinking again and the brake light on the right comes on again.”

With the brake on does the right turn signal go on constant? Is the right front signal light off or on? is the left brake light on or off?

“If I have the hazards on and hit the brake all the lights, including the front turn signals just stay on”

This is normal. Unlike the turn signal switch, the hazard light switch doesn’t disconnect the brake light circuit from the brake/signal lights.

in that case, the only problem i have is that when i have the right turn signal on and hit the brakes, the only lights that are on is the front right turn signal and the rear right turn signal, but without hitting the brakes the right turn signals both work fine. other than that everything works, so would it still be a ground problem with that right rear light? thanks for your help

Couldn't this just be the rear bulb? I've had a similar problem where the brake light works, and the turn signal works, but not together, and a new bulb fixed it...
