Just bought a single four barrel offenauser tunnel ram and was wondering how it will make my mild 454 act. 9.1 comp, big oval port heads. Cam is a 270H comp cam.
Now the intake is a spread bore and it looks to be a dual plane. If the intake is square bore will it work with my oval heads? I'm hoping it will run.

first off, a dual plane is a dual plane, like in Performer, or factory cast iron manifold. A 'split' direction manifold with a center wall inside, dividing the flow between the banks of cylinders. A spreadbore is the designation for the carb mounting surface of a manifold, (as in Quadra-Jet. E.G. small primaries, large secondaries).
A tunnel ram is a tunnel ram, not a dual plane or a spreadbore. To get the most out of a tunnel ram, you need the correct matching components in place to make power in the upper rpm ranges. Big cam, loose converter and high numerical gears.

Do you plan on cutting up that factory SS hood? You'll have to to fit it in the engine compartment.
You won't gain any substantial power by adding a single component such as this.

I have an old fiberglass I'd cut up. And if I can get it to idle and at least drive I think it would be a hoot to drive this summer. If it loads up really bad and won't idle then I'll sell it and recoop the money.

Which tunnel ram did you get? offy made some oval port boat ones that actually could be run on street cars. I wouldn't recommend it but they are better than the race car ones

You can put a tunnel ram on anything but as JimmyP said you do need the right components to make it really work for horsepower. I had a dual carb tunnel ram on a 283 Chevy with (somthing like 390cfm each) Holleys. Looked wicked as the devil but never really performed well. They're quite driveable if you don't get one flooded

Yes, that's the least of your problems.

Stacey, my aplogoies. I thought you were nuts! But you're not and the manifold you described is something I've never seen. Looks like it was made for a Quadra-Jet. It's possible that someone has experience with one of these, I don't know. If I had one, I'd try it out. What do you have to lose? The square port/oval port isn't a big issue. The hood would be, though. Here's a link to the picture you sent me. Sorry man! Anybody seen one of these?

No problem Jimmy! Let me know if you guys think this will work.
Anything I should do with the carb, 750 vac secondaries.
clearance in the back looks like I might need a small distibutor.
Where can I go for adjustable cable linkage?

Look close! That isn's so much a tunnel ram as it is a 2-4bbl manifold "with an attitude"! Please post a photo of the manifold base, and the internal structure of the manifold top. Is it a dual plane all the way thru?

Many 2-4bbl manifolds are quite streetable. My concern with this one is the "HUGE" plenum that's gonna have to be filled with an itty bitty accelerator pump shot, especially if you use a QJ.

First guess: You'll be disappointed in the outright performance, but the "wow" factor will be most enjoyable.

I bought this off ebay and haven't recieved it yet. When I do I'll repost with pics. The ebayer hasn't emailed me with any feedback, so I'm hoping I even get it. Already paid for it too. I've been told through an email that this setup doesn't distribute evenly. That is why you don't see many because they suck. I talked to a jet boat specialist,BTW, it's for a boat, and he said fire it up with big jets and run it for a bit, then pull the plugs and see how she looks.
I'm listening if anybody has any other advice. I got the part about accelerator pump.BTW, I have a holley.
Let me say I don't care about performance. I had all my fun with this with my old 350 tubo tranny. I have a 700r now and just like to cruz and let the 454 holler once in a while.

A friend of mine has a 390 (yeah, I know its a ford) with a dual quad tunnel ram on it....It is a COMPLETELY STOCK motor and runs great with a pair of 390cfm carbs.

Tuning is everything.

I answered your Email. That is the boat one and like others have said it is sort of a tunnel ram. They do work reasonably well in warm weather but have just too much volume for cold weather work.

Yeah I have ZERO experience, but something tells me you'll want a double pumper carb with PLENTY of pump shot so it isnt too doggy. 50cc up front and probably 30cc in back with a orange cam and #37 -40 squirter with the "Colbyized" pump housing ( cut out an old accel pump diaphram and just use the outer gasket to increase pump volume by 7-8 cc)The plenum looks really, really big!
