Was taking a ride in my brother-in-law's 1998 Suburban that he just bought, and noticed that the 'service engine soon' light was on. I mentioned it and he said it's just on because they are preprogrammed to come on every 40,000 miles or so to get you to take it to a shop. Now I've heard this before, and it makes very little sense to me that the computer would trip a code for no reason other than it's been awhile since it's thrown a code. Is there any basis in fact for this or is it just a bunch of bull?

The computer recorded a bona-fide problem.

A buddy of mine had a Chevy Chevette. At around 100k miles, a red flag popped up over the odometer that said "Emissions".

THAT was preprogrammed to "come on" at a certain time.

But I'd say there is a legitimate problem with that Suburban.

My moms Saab 9-3 says "service engine soon" when its needs an oil change. I asked and they confirmed you need a Tech 2 to reset the oil life monitor on a Saab. WHAT BULL!

Completely bunk that a Suburban would throw the light at 40k. He needs to take it to a parts store with a scanner and have them pull the code(s).

Actually you don't need the tech2, when the oil life is under 10%, that gives you an option to reset it. The other method is to change the date on the display a couple years ahead and you can then reset it, and roll the date back. Without the low life or the date being rolled ahead making it think for sure the oil has got to be bad, then you have to use the tech2 to reset :)

I had a Nissan truck back in '85 that the manual said the light was programmed to come on every 30K miles and you had to go to the dealer to get it reset. After 90K they disconnected it. Thought it was weird, but whatever.

Never heard of that on a Suburban. Unless there is an issue.

I had a 1989 Dodge truck that had a service engine light. The manual said that it does not indicate a problem;it turns on after so many hours of engine operation. I took the bulb out after reading the manual. It said to go to chapter 8 for resetting instructions. Of course there was nothing in Chapter 8 about it.

As an ex GM tech....BULL. The only GM vehicle that was programmed to have the check engine light come on was the '95 and older Tracker, and that technically wasn't GM, but the light would come on at 50,000 miles. Had a toggle switch under the dash that had to be switched over to reset. It's probab ly nothing serious but he should still have it looked at. Most likely an Oxygen sensor code or an EVAP code.

Knock sensor codes are common. too. Does the engine bay look really clean? If it was pressure washed before he bought it, the knock sensors in the lifter valley under the intake are probably wet/rusty and could be the source of the SES light.
