Several of the street rod guys in my group run small V-8 and V-6 engines and don't require a killer type transmission. We are still trying to get more gas millage for longer trips and we are wondering if a regular T-5 trans could be used. The Ford type is less cost. Does anyone make an adaptor to put it on a Chevy bellhousing? We know you can get a Camaro T-5 but the trans is tilted and the shifter is angled.

If you do a search, you'll find that even the World Class T-5 is no match for even a stout small block. If indeed you want a straight shift, a T-56 might be in order.

Research the NP440, the Chevy/MOPAR 4Sp Overdrive trans. Chevy had them in the 81 to 86 pickups - either a cast iron casing or an aluminum casing. It has a .71 overdrive gear as its 4 gear. Some of them have the Chevy trans/bellhousing bolt pattern and others had the MOPAR bolt pattern. Also, the shifter is unique to this transmission, so look for one with the original Hurst shifter with it; they are easy to take apart, clean, grease and reassemble. About the bellhousing, Chevy designed a 12" bellhousing with both bolt patterns to handle either one, so check out which thransmission you are getting. I searched for one with the bellhousing and original hurst shifter to make things work right.

Ed,

I had a stock '91 Mustang 5.0 with only 225HP with a T-5. My friend added some upgraded heads to his 5.0, some under drive pulleys and proceeded to destroy 2 stock T-5 trannys (his original and then another new one). From what I understand is that the stock T-5 is not rated for much more that a factory stock motor puts out.
