I have recently installed an engine(350 vortec)and transmission (350turbo) in my 1973 chevelle project. My problem is when I put the car in drive it will only move (forward) if I press the throttle. It will not go in reverse (even when I give it throttle). I put the car on jack stands same results (tires will not move forward unless you give it the gas) but will not go in reverse. I put the car in neutral (still off the ground ) and I cannot turn the driveshaft by hand . I'm hoping this is something simple I'm over looking. I have checked the convertor its in correctly. I ran new 3/8 transmission lines recently filled the transmission with fluid and checked the fluid levels . Unfortunaty I do not know the history of the transmission as it came with the body. Am I overlooking something ? The rear tires do spin freely so its not the rear. Shouldn't I be able to turn the driveshaft in neutral by hand with the rear off the ground? Please any help will be greatly appreciated.

Initial simple checks.

Makes sure the fluid level is correct in the trans. This will cause this.

Make sure the linkage is properly adjusted from the trans case lever to the shift control, etc. Maybe remove the cable and check it on jackstands with just the case lever.

Otherwise, it may be time to r&r.

What is the history of the trans?

Unfortunately I have no idea of the history of it . I traded my 84 c10 pro street body for rhw chevelle and to keep from having a driveshaft made I let my transmission go with the truck and trusted the guy when he said it was good. I know big mistake lol live and learn. Now what I forgot to mention is when I put the car in any gear the RPMs do drop as if it were in gear correctly, however I'm unsure why I can't manually turn the drive shaft by hand with the rear up off the ground could this be the govenor or do I have a pos ?
