I've got a 454 with 400 trans. I need a new radiator and as thinking of getting a transmission cooler too.

Should I get the Manual radiator and just run the transmission through it's own cooler, or the Automatic radiator and run the transmission through both?

Thanks!

Unless you live in a VERY warm climate and/or dont drive it on the street you need to use the factory cooler in the radiator. It acts as a heater for the trans fluid in cold climates-too cool fluid can be just as bad as overheated fluid/fluid thats too hot.
I've heard various ways to mount the external cooler but a good source of info is from our sponser-ALUMITECH REPRODUCTIONS

I did not run an external cooler as ours is not raced nor driven on extended drives-it rarely exceeds 175-185 in stock configuration. However I did install a deep GM pan and trans temp guage to monitor it.
Every vehicle I have ever seen runs the external cooler in series after the existing radiator cooler.

A heat to fluid trans cooler in the rad is 45% more efficent then a after market air to air heat transfer of a external ...but you can get additional cooling like a towing package set up on the return to the trans with it in line after the rad .

keep on mind the temp you see on the dash is coolant temp in the block ..coolant on the cool side of the rad can be 40 to 60 degrees cooler where the trans cooler is located .

I use both because I run a 3000 stall converter and they generate much more heat than a standard converter. I run the fluid through the radiator cooler first then through my b&m supercooler then back to the trans. It keeps my tans happy even while cruising around town which is when that converter generates the most heat.
