I`m hoping someone can help me ,took the old girl out for a spin tonight, went maybe a mile stropped at a stop sign. When I started to drive away I heard a whine:( that increased with rpm, whenyou put the car in low its very loud as rpms increase ,also you can hear it in neutral/park trans fluid is full and nice and pink,I did notice a little slippage, but feels more like the converter the trans is a 400 and converter 3000 no name, does it sound like the converter or trans

This is not an end all but try this. Go buy some Trans Doctor at the Auto Parts Store and dump a bottle in and drive about 10 miles, also let idle in park and drive. Try this for a few days if you can. If the noise goes away or really dissipates odds are its the pump.If your converter is shot you will know it.

Might be the pressure relief valve in the pump stuck or the spring broke too..

Let the trans shift into 2nd gear, let off the gas, and pull the shifter down to low range. If you hear a loud whine or grinding, then I would suspect a plantary failure inside of the transmission. Something else to check, is to make sure the transmission mount hasn't broke and is contacting the crossmember metal to metal, which will also make the normal planetary whine much louder. If the mount is OK, you need to remove the pan for inspection.

Also whining can be caused by a very simple clogged filter, Had it happen

Had a filter in for i dont know how many years and never changed it, started whining and replaced the filter as i have seen this before and it was fixed

Is this a TH350 or TH400?

Generally, if it's the torque convertor, it will only whine when transmission is put into gear. An easy test is to put trans into drive and slightly power brake it, if it whines when you do this, then it is likely the torque convertor, or as Butch mentioned, the filter is plugged up. If it only whines when the vehicles is moving and the whine quits as it changes gears, then it is likely inside of the transmission.

New motor? 70s block?

One of the most common 70s quality control problems is bad bell housing flange machining. It shows up either as misalignment of the bell housing flange and therefore the trans centerline with the crank centerline, or the BH flange not perpendicular to the crank centerline which is not as common. That's probably #3 of the major QC issues in frequency of occurence, behind The Starter Problem (starter bolt holes drilled too far from the crank) and The Lifter Bore Problem (lifter bores not perpendicular to the cam and/or not pointed at the cam centerline, causing the block to eat cams regardless of any efforts to the contrary).

For the former problem, offset dowel pins usually fix it. The latter problem is a bit tougher; usually requires a different block, although I suppose it would be theoretically possible to shim it somehow.

To give you an idea, my 74 Caprice convertible's 454 has both the same probem you have, the pump whine and short trans life (about 3 or 4 transmissions and converters have all acted EXACTLY the same), and The Starter Problem (so bad I was able to buy it for about a quarter of what it was worth because it wouldn't start reliably, and when I finally hooked up 2 batteries to it to try to get it to start, the starter broke right off of the block and fell down TO THE GROUND). A friend had a 400 that had it so bad that he couldn't get a pump seal to survive longer than a few hours.

I had a whine issue when I first put a th400 in my car years ago. I called the trans builder and he said that th400's sometimes do that as the pump gears may not mesh well...I never did understand his simple explanation. I took the trans out, drove 4 hours to his shop, he replaced the pump and it's was silent after that.

mine is doing the same thing, in park or nuetral as well. I have had a pump issue before a few years ago and it sounded similar.

I finally got around to pulling the pan, turns out its full of aluminum shavings:(. I pulled the trans out ,the converter sounds like it`s got marbles in it not good:mad: I guess its a good time to have the tans gone thru and get a new converter.I am leaning toward a Coan converter and having Coan go thru the trans, anyone have good or bad luck with Coan.

Thanks Brian

For what your looking for you would be best going with a person such as Jake or another builder

With Coan they will most likely use all their parts, which is not bad but could make the bill high

A builder may feel its better to have Raybestos, Borg Warner or Alto clutches or a mix depending on your application

Try a builder first, should be much cheaper and more suited to your needs
