I am about to buy a set of fabricated Valve covers, but I am curious. They come in two options, With breather holes, or without.

Makes me ask two questions.

1.) Is having a breather cap necessary for N/A engines, or will running without them be fine.

2.) Where do I put the oil in when their isn't any breather holes, ah through the dipstick.

I would guess the non vented covers are for the older blocks which had oil filler tube at the front of the intake and the draft tube at the top rear of the block. I believe the last year for these blocks was 1964 or '65.

You will need some kind of crankcase vent or a vacuum evacuation system. Otherwise any blowby in the crankcase and even just the oil expanding due to heat will build pressure and cause a leak.

Here's the deal,,
You must have a vent or vacuum system,,,
Or the engine will eventually "vent" itself,,,, somewhere :D
Yes, PCV valves help to vent the engine but only when you have intake vacuum which is at idle, part throttle etc.
At full throttle it is just along for the ride so you still must have some sort of venting.

The reason the covers are sold without vent holes is they have no idea of what you are going to do with your engine
Are you going to run it with vents?
Would you like vents in both covers (good idea)
Would you like them both to the rear, in the middle or one front & one rear?
Are you going to run a vacuum system?

Definetly need breathers.

The ones without holes are for vacuum pump setups, since every setup is different, they feel you can put the holes in as you please for the fittings/ect that your setup needs

Okay, Final questions on the subject. Is it normal for the breathers to be at adjacent ends rather then both up front or both at the back? The set I am looking at, seems to have one on each side at opposite ends.

Is it recommended to use say the hole on back for a PCV and the other hole in the front for a breather or just two breathers?

D. that is because they are universal. Cheaper to stamp one cover rather than a left and right. So one ends up in front and one in the back. I have seen some higher end covers that had a L and R cover which gives you the option of both in front or back.

For $100.00 less I think I can live with the offset.
