He was dead on. I posted in another forum about buying a small block crate motor for my Chevelle and the third reply was why dont you just put in an LS and be done.
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, what do you suppose they would have to say about this kind of antique technology? I'd really love to have something like this dinosaur to replace the T-bucket. I called the guy about it, but he is not ready to sell, plus, it is out of my price range (not surprised!).

500hp????? I don't think so!
Cool and dependable? Very much so!
Would anyone park this next to their 800hp BB Chevelle? I would, in a heartbeat!

Like I'm looking in a mirror ! And I like LT/LS engines. They always want to compare A mildly built LS to an original BBC/SBC. They tend to forget that those internals and upgrades have kept up with the times as well.

"FYI: THIS IS SOMEWHAT TONGUE AND CHEEK AND IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUNNY.", but all FACT !

Two of my pet peeves:

1) As mentioned in the YouTube video, when seeking advice as to what SBC or BBC to build, someone chimes in with "GO LS.....you stupid sum of b*tch".

2) When carburetor tuning questions are asked, someone has to reply "Just go EFI."

Thanks....for nothing.

Mine:

1) It will start and run better.

2) No Carb adjustments...

3) No maintenance.

Like every engine before an LS ran like crap, wouldn't start or idle, and needed maintenance before it drove anywhere.

It's funny, I have a topend from Eric sitting on my shelf that cost more than my whole LS swap did....I will still need another 5K to get the shortblock done and then another 1K or so for the cam and lifters...and the stock LS 3 heads that I bought for $650 flow more (by a little).

They all make power...

I have to say though that the big block guys were or can be just as bad. Its been better lately. I was getting pretty tired for awhile there of every small block related thread having posts about the best way to fix your small block is to get rid of it and get a big block. That's why I chuckle a little bit now when I see the big block guys hear the same stuff from the LS guys.

Eric is a great cylinder head guy, top notch work and is willing to share ideas and his work on youtube. Just watched several of his vids this week and I did learn some new things to try.

The fanboys exist for sure. I've had many people suggest or ask why I don't go with an LS. If I was building a small block car, I would go LS over the traditional SBC. Of course one key ingredient would be the aluminum block. Eric is right that at the drag strip you will mostly see big block chevy's, at least in the 10-13 second range. Go to an autocross or road course, and a big block chevy is rare, very rare.

I don't have a problem with being reminded that the LS is a great platform, and it is annoying that it gets pushed as the end all and be all of engines, but I just hate how the car media puts it in every damn thing with 4 wheels. The LS is a virus in the car magazines and flooded over many popular youtube channels. It gets boring! I did a poll on Team Chevelle a couple years ago thinking that the LS had to make up at least 33% of the Chevelle community. Nope. It was like 69% BBC, and 6% LS.

To your point, I will say that I've seen quite a few threads since I've joined where people have asked questions regarding their 396, and have been told to get a 454 block because they make more power. And that's true, but I still like my little high winding 396!:D

That's a little different, IMHO....b/c you're staying in the same platform and everything else currently in your car will still work. Piston choices increase with 427 and 454s....and they often cost less than a 396 build. I look at that as good information or constructive criticism.
Same deal with "how to most economically rebuild a 307?".....that many people answer with "just build a 350 for cheaper."
On a side note, the auto press is soon going to fall in love with the new LT platform and then, gasp, the new Ford Coyote motor.

I like the LT's variable cam timing. Now they CAN produce more prodigious gobs of TQ than an n/a LS can.

The first time I truly saw an LS block up close and personal , I was sort of in awe. At the Buffalo NY Autorama, and the local union from Tonawanda had a display. Man,all that main cap splaying etc was Keith Black hemi not long ago. Very stout piece the LS is. It isnt going away anytime soon, and will continue to be a fav of "modernizing" rides.

I love the LT motor, but it's a great motor for a 6th gen, not necessarily for a classic. In fact - I have one, 2016 SS that I bought new and it's a smooth motor that makes way more power under the curve than it feels like. But it costs some significant money to put one in a classic and the cost / benefit just isn't there for me right now. You can make similar power from a traditional SBC, especially if you start with a 400 block which is a really nice big bore small block - it's not hard to make 500hp and 500tq from one with a relatively mild set-up. And carbs work just fine, honestly - if you know how to tune them and you run a return fuel system with an in-tank EFI style pump. It keeps the fuel fresh and cool and the motor starts instantly and doesn't vapor-lock, plus there are many EFI systems available these days for traditional SBC / BBC if you want to go that route. I have a sniper on my Chevelle with a 454 - and I won't really say it works better than a carb, but it works pretty good and is probably easier to set-up and get tuned than a carb. But I love the power curve of a 454 - it is just far different than any LS motor or small block, and I've owned a bunch of LS motors over the years mostly in Corvette's, so I know them quite well.

The LS is junk. Please stop buying them and inflating the prices.

I'm just buying them up to keep them away from all the LS jokers out there who don't know anything. I consider my hoard a public service to enhance the SBC!

The LS is hard to tune, has a mess of wiring, metric bolts, and looks like a kids first Lego abomination. Stop buying them fellow gearheads!

:p
