Oh I'm sure he had givers remorse. Those trucks and engines were know for being extremely reliable. I've seen them start up with some pre-lubing and cranking after 30 yrs. I'm sure the tolerances were not that much back then but it helped them stay running all those years.

I would roll vs. trim the lips just a bit that way you keep all the welds and structural integrity.
