I have a slight amount of play in the tilt joint of a 70 column and the chrome ear piece that turns with the key is has an ear broken off . how difficult and are they to fix and what are the prices like . the play is not bad enough for me to want to take it out and send it away .thanx in advance , DAVE.

If the tilt is loose as a result of the internal bolts becoming loose, then it requires a certain amount of disassembly (which can be done in the car) to access these 4 bolts. They require a special socket. The looseness could also be the result of normal wear.
To access these 4 bolts requires removing the steering wheel, retainer plate (requires a tool to compress so that a snap ring can be removed), and then the turn signal mechanism. This will also get you to the location for removing the lock cylinder for replacement.
