Hi, I'm new here I hope you guys can help. Can somebody tell me if a 71 Chevelle floorshift column is the same for a 4spd manual & a floorshift auto? Thanx Billy

The column is not the same but can be used. The auto column has linkage going to it from the tranny for the neutral safety switch, back up lights and shift lock when key is out. You will have to use a shifter with these provisions.

i believe even the manual tans cars had a linkage going from the trans to the column so the key could only be taken out if the trans was in reverse.
i believe it was called the "back drive linkage".

This is correct and the manual trans shift arm at the end of the column is much shorter than the automatic version.

I'll see if I can dig out both versions tomorrow and post a picture.

Thanx for your replys. Nate pic would be great or a measurement of the shift arm for one. Either manual or auto. I'm trying to figure out which column I have. If it will work in my ride.

i think whichever one you have will "work", but you might not be able to hook up all the factory safety stuff.
