always wanted a gear drive and have heard mixed thoughts about them but i read good things about them

i know they cause drag and cost me horspoeower but im not a drag racer i like the gear drive whine but want to know about hwo strong they are? i have been thinking about it and need some advice, i know i may sound like a dork but i dig that gear drive whine, a friend of mine had once on his small block and i i always liked it, you could here him pull in the parking lot before you saw the car

any thought?

I am assuming you are talking about a timing gear not an add on overdrive. on that assumtion I have seen properly installed ones work fine and I have seen bad installed ones fail and cause much motor destruction. same goes for different brands seen summit ones fall apart and procomps fail seen better brands like pete jackson live where aformantioned failed but have seen pete jacksons fail when installed badly. so for me I stick with a nice billet roller chain but if you want the noise of a gear drive just becarefull of the cheapo ones and make sure it is correctly installed. just my 2 cents

I've still got a real 'hankerin'" to install the quiet version when I do the motor.

I really love the way Ironhead (60's-70's) Harley motors have that muted huffing whine sound that their gear driven cams make vs. the Evo's (84 and up) and I think the "quiet" version Jackson might do the same.

Kind of like this.

Listen to it in this video:

 Er...uuhh...Opps l:)..I mean this one :

If you check on Ebay, you can find Maddog parts has a nice rollmaster 9 keyway billet timing set for around $60 plus shipping. I am currently using a crane 3 keyway timing set with the torrington bearing($76 from Summit) and will end up using Summit's brand timing set when I do a rebuild. Summit's timing set is made by SA gear.
