One of the few remaining test and tunes last night, and I tell ya, these modern rides are the shizz! I ran a fella in a stock Z06 a few times and dang...... Last week the tuned SS Cammro had near 3/4 of a second on me. The Corvette a full second and SMOKED me in the 1/8 , 8.0 v 7.10.

Hey I'm not racing anyone, just getting some seat time and tweaking the car to some better mphs. Its still off, only showing 91/92 in the 1/8. Found a few MPH in some marginal spark control, and now it's likely onto the carb/fuel delivery for some tuning.

Just real impressed with the new iron. I recall someone's brand new Corvette at Music City during a CB event, and it was a pooch frankly. The "poochies" these days run right on 7.0/ 99mph in the 1/8 STOCK!

The Mustang had some sort of "two step" burnout controller. WOW! Although, we told him how cool it was, and he layed down a John Force smoke show during his third run ( I was staged behind) him) and popped a half-shaft!

Anyway, I tell ya, was toying with making the 64 Elky a drag car, although we spoke of it being a highway car. Highway car it is! I'll pick up a Vette strictly for drag racing. Or a Coyote-breathing Mustang frankly ( which look much better than Camaros to me) .

Made some new friends, and have a better appreciation for modern tech at the strip, for sure.

Nothing broke, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, no deer jumped in front of the car on the hour+ ride home. I stopped at a convenience store and got to talking with a local and a state trooper there. The trooper said I was crazy driving the car at night with the deer, he had just avoided one. I told him I say the same to my wife, racing at the track is safe, the ride home....?|

Oh and PS, we were all rowing the gears by hand!

ENJOY YOUR SEASON'S END YOU DRAG RACERS!

I’m not really a drag racer at all but recently went to a Wednesday night drag session at Sonoma raceway. There was a bone stock, 13 second, Hyundai Genesis. 102 in the quarter. There was a bone stock Cadillac that ran an 11.6.
Yes, the new iron is pretty amazing. Butt ugly, but amazing.
I look at them as potential donors to our hobby. Not so much the Hyundai.

I hear you. My kid just purchased a 2021 Silverado 6.2 - this 5100 lb. hunk of iron supposedly runs a 14 flat 1/4 mile @ 100 mph off the showroom floor. Would probably give my Chevelle a run for its money...

Crazy how fast these new cars are. Main reason I upgraded my engine and transmission a couple months ago.

You must've been at Lancaster Wed. night? I've always intended to make the trip, but that 2 hour drive home worries me with all the deer. You are just gonna have to make the jump to a more modern drive train in your Chevelle. Can I see an LS-4 swap in your future?? lol. it's amazing the kind of power they get out of those motors. I'm thinking of making the swap myself as I had a valve or something break on # 1 cyl in my motor the other night. @$%&%[email protected]#!.....That or just put something in it and roll it.

Only 91-92 in the 1/8 mile and 8.0 et. I think you can improve that with some launch.

I did not know what my 57 chevy 4 door ran for MPH in the 1/8 mile but the 1/4 is was only 100.
Timing was retarded from 38 to 28 total.. Happened during the burnout.
Angle for the driveshaft is way off and can't pull past 6000 in 3rd gear (high gear).

I did manage 8.068 in the 1/8 mile and looked up a time slip and found 83.06 MPH in the 1/8.

I do not know what your 60 foot time is but maybe there are some points there.
Mine was 1.728 in the 60 foot.
I am running a TH350 and sticks are sometimes harder to get out of the hole without blowing the tires off or bogging.

I know you have more engine than I do, you have potential to put the hurt on these new rides.
I was running 350" flat top 280H magnum flat tappet cam [email protected] .050 I am running stock rockers.
601 305 heads with 1.84-1.50 valves ..I ported them.
Just about any aftermarket head out there today will trump these 601's 220 in and 174 ex cfm @ .500"
This is my daily driver with a trailer hitch and I just change a few things to go drag racing.
I drive it there and home and I have even pulled a buddy there on my trailer and raced and pulled him home.. He was afraid he would break something.

7.0's is getting it on though.
These new cars are quick and fast but I feel old school isn't going to give up easily.
I am not giving up on the old school just yet.

I bet you get a lot more out of your vehicle. I hope you do anyway.

What is your combo so far?

Oh, I'm not about to throw modern stuff in Old Red; what's the point? Point was that I have a new appreciation for the modern stuff.

For sure Jeff, it either slipped off the line or during the top of the 1st gear pull. I never lowered the DR's below 16.5 psi. Launching a 4 gear into a 3.31 oem rear isn't the easiest thing. 60's sat at around 1.95-2,0.

PS while Mark Jones asked me NOT to use the Qjet for racing, at 91 /110 mph, why not try it? If it was 97/122 maybe I wouldn't.

Again, I think the venerable Holley 850 may also need a bit of tuning.

Mike W, no last night was at Empire Dragway, in Leiscester NY , in the middle of nowhere! Great track though. Super long shut down, hardly have to brake. The bulletin read 1/4 TnT, but it was all 1/8 mile last night.

"Last chance saloon" at Lancaster is OCT 9. Which is a Saturday - day. Nevertheless, my trip to Lancaster is 85% on the 90 Thruway, where a deer collision is a bit less likely. Last night was corn fields and woodplots with 2 lane country roads !

What's your 20?

8.0's with 4 speed and 331 gear I am very impressed.
I ran Nitto 555R 275-60-15 at 28 psi. 5.5" wide wheels.
I built a Nova for a buddy and ran MT drag radials 275-60-15 and 28 psi TH 350.
1.6 60 foot times. 8" wide wheels.

In the drag radials I try a lot of pressure and if they stick I do not change it.

Of course I do burnouts on clean concrete and look at the contact patch.. light in the middle the tire gets aired up.

Have you tried more air pressure in the radials?
I see lots of people letting air out of them I just never had to.

Now my Hoosier wrinkle wall style tires not a radial I would run 8 psi.

My 327 runs OK and does everything I need it to do, but compared to my Honda Pilot, I think the Honda has the advantage at times. I know the 327 could perform better and I'll be taking it to my mechanic soon for some tweaking. He's a drag racer. Has a couple cars with all fiberglass bodies that lift up. I just remember them called "Funny Cars". Not sure what's the real classification.

You know what Jeff, if I am going to TnT this old warhorse any more I'd better get that steel bell up in there. I'll take your advice on the DRs. I just bought a 0-20 psi guage at NAPA on the way to the track. THANKS! ;) I've tried 25 and its no stick.

Funny you mention that. Last run at General Lee @ the NOCC show, I let air out, warmed them up more , and it got WORSE. I had to run that SOB down! You can hear them glazing the track on the vid. Ugly sound on a dragstrip!

when they Hooked with 15 lbs of Air the Best I could get ;
60 foot = 1.764 et
1/8th = 7.801 et @ 89.85 mph
1/4 = 12.188 et @ 112.40 mph

I then changed to a M/T ET Street S/S # 3454 295/55/15 with 20 lbs of Air and this is the Best with them ;
60 foot = 1.664 et they seem to Dead Hook or very little slip at all
1/8th = 7.532 et @ 91.24 mph
1/4 = 11.814 et @ 115.60 mph

I needed to put some Air in the Rear PassingerSide Air Bag so both Front Tires would come Off the Ground
So just by changeing to the Bigger M/T Tire the Times improved greatly

I can honestly say I grew up in the era of the real performance cars in the late 60's early 70's. I've owned quite a few of these types of cars over the years and even tried a few of the newer versions of todays performance cars. Never owned anything really radical or of high horsepower ratings but just enough to put a smile on my face. I could never get the look that the old cars can give you on any of my newer versions. I owned quite a few Corvettes starting with a 65 roadster and the last was a 88 convertible. Today I'd still take a 63 to 67 era Corvette over anything they put out today. I do drive a 2017 Challenger GT as my everyday car that I bought brand new but my driving has really dropped off over the years and it has less than 11,000 miles on it. After my stent with the newer versions I came back to the old iron where I would rather be, crazy horsepower means nothing to me you can only drive so fast. Todays cars seem to be more of the cookie cutter design sure you can add this and that to them but they still don't have the appeal of the old cars.

This is why we LS swap... best of both worlds.

12.210 @ 115 and 18mpg getting there with the AC on.
With a better driver, it would go high 11s pretty easy in a daily-drivable street car.

I've tried 25 and its no stick.
Bummer that it did not work.
I found on the street the MT tires will not stick and I have heard the newer MT SS is stickier.

At the track with a burnout the MT tires stuck very well we would do a burnout until the tone of tire screeching changed then stop and stage it.

For ultimate street Hook I ran the Hoosier dirt stockers.
That was when I was running a lightened 78 Nova and running mid 11's.
9" ford and full spools though.
Dirt stockers would not stick at the track.

You should be deep into the 11's with that MPH, was that on street tires? My 69' runs 11.70 @ 115 on slicks. But my old school carbureted 388 small block only gets 16 MPG on the way to the track, no AC though. My car runs great for what it is and I don't think it would be worth it to LS swap the car now. But, if I were to start a new build, it would have LS power.

That pic is awesome! My car 60' is about the same (1.65), but I don't get any daylight under the front tires.

I have the MT street et/ss and second gear 45-80mph it will leave 2 black marks while passing at wot. Still learning to drive with the added power. I was dead hooking with the smaller motor. It was only 430ish at the crank.

I'm sure once Old Red is dialed in, you'll be putting the hurt on the new cars. And even if you don't you'll look a lot cooler trying. (y)
