I've told this before in a thread...
About a year or so ago a guy was trying to sell a set of 138 VIN and trim tags that he was carrying in a plastic baggie at our local Classic Car Cruise-In (he eventually did sell them).
A "Chevelle guy" who was standing near me pointed the guy out to a local cop who was walking a beat at the Cruise-In.
The cop essentially said that as long as the guy wasn't selling stolen parts or operating a vendor's stand without a permit, that there was nothing he could do about it...and did nothing.

I know that technically it's illegal to deal in these VIN tags, and you hear people say it's a Federal crime, etc., and I agree with all of that. But, in the day-to-day real world, I don't think that most cops are really that interested that some guy is selling a 30 or 40 year old Chevy VIN tag on eBay or on the sidewalk at a local Cruise-In.

Cops may not be, but eBay probably is.

There's only one thing these can be used for...

if you graft that section of car with the tag onto a different vette, is it(in theory) any different than "clipping" a SS chevelle that is rotten to use thed 138 vin cowl/firewall?

There are 2 entities that can legally attach a VIN to a car. One, the manufacturer and Two, the DMV of the 50 states. PERIOD! Do people do it, yes they do and it is ALWAYS ILLEGAL! Us mere mortals are not legally allowed to fool with a VIN. I've heard every rationalization there is about it but at the end of the day it is always illegal. Some get caught, some don't.

but, what if you transfered the section of car that the vin is riveted to,without removing the tag...I know it sounds goofy but just asking for the sake of discussion.

I would say that the vast majority don't.
I'd say that the majority of people who have dealt with, sold or advertised 40 year old Chevy VIN tags have suffered no legal consequences as a result.

I'm not debating whether it's illegal or not. Most people (including myself) fully understand that it's technically illegal...so is speeding, downloading music and fudging on one's taxes...but the vast majority of people don't get caught. And when it comes to someone advertising a 40 year old Chevy VIN tag, I'd say the majority of law enforcement personnel are apathetic and unconcerned.

When it comes to just the body. Not all of the other parts that make up a real SS. At the end of the day what's the difference if you take a rusted to the ground basket case real 138 SS car and replace every piece of sheet metal and most of the car comes out of a catalog. Or graft the cowl area, trim tag or vin tag of said 138 SS on to a nice rust free malibu body that retains all of its factory sheet metal.

Why is the catalog car better. If both cars are restored to show winning condition who cares. I'm not saying it's right but I would rather have a rust free body that was spot welded together at the factory.

JUST MY OPINION.

Ahhhh, just another example of why #'s cars are of no real interest to me. Without of a dumptruck full of docs, its just another car. Condition is everything, be it a malibu or an SS or a copo or whatever. It's just too easy to "make" a numbers matching car. I guess every hobby has its share of shifty people who are only here to turn a buck. Sad part is, alot of buyers get sucked in, thinking they really have an all original car. Then when they get the facts, its usually too late.

... Hence, my well-flamed point in another thread several months ago about how these cars are really not worth the prices that some people pay for them, if the only determinant of their value comes down to an easily forged piece of paper.

It's still wrong and quite illegal to change a car's VIN, though.

Has anyone seen the new ads by Goodmark? They will sell you an entire car shell and affix YOUR VIN to it and you can register it as original. I saw the ad in Hemmings Muscle Car. They were referring to a Camero, but they make Chevelles also. Jerry

What matters is that someone will steal a very nice Malibu, then put a legit SS vin tag on it and resell it for $$$.
