Seems a little corny, but I know I've had the same feeling described of awkwardness about walking up to a complete stranger, serviceman or woman, and thanking him/her/them - Yet I appreciate and value all that they do for us all tremendously! Then I normally feel guilty afterward for not doing it. May have to give this a try.
