I've read the posts here and on the other classic forums, but would like to get a final opinion on whether to rebuild the TH350 or upgrade to the 700R4.
71 Malibu, Engine is a stock 383 crate from GM putting out 340HP and 435 LB/FT with a 3.08 rear end. At 2400rpm the car drives at 55mph and around 3500rpm at 70mph.
The car was previously used as a daily driver and I have no intentions of racing it, just want it fast enough to not get beat out by a stock civic at a stop light. My mechanic (trusted family friend) has encouraged me to stay with the 350 because of long term durability and has quoted me at $700 for a rebuild of the 350 and $1500 for the 700R4.
I am leaning towards the 700R4 because lowering the engine noise would be great, in addition to the better gas mileage and less wear on the engine. Is durability that much of an issue on the 700R4 for what would be a cruiser/daily driver?
Thanks
-Keith
