Alright guys, I need a little newbie help with my project car. I have been working on rust issues for several months now and wanted to give the motor a shot. The motor was rebuilt buy a guy that I bought it from but I have not cranked it. I just got a exhaust system put on an have the itch real bad.

The car is gutted so there is no dash. How would you guys go amout the start up with the motor in the car without installling everything and having to remove it all again before paint?

I would like to get a set of guages and fab a little test stand console. Here is how I plan to do it and wanted to run it by you guys.

Batt cable from + to big post on starter
Batt cable from - on Batt to ground
10ga wire from alternator to + on battery. Does this need a resistor?
wire start key in between big and little post on starter
Set Distributor to 8-10 degrees BTC
Fill fuilds and prime oil pump
plug vacuum hose to distributor

I just want to run the thing before I get the car ready for paint and find another issue?

my son and I rebuilt our engine last summer and didn't start it until early this spring. We pulled the distributor and primed the the oil pump to lube up the engine before we turned it over. I'm not sure if it was necessary but better to be safe than sorry.

Hook up your battery to the starter and ground onto the motor. Get one of those push button jumper wire set ups and hook it to your stater postive and the back terminal on the silenoid. Run a wire to the positive side of the coil, provide a gas source and push the button. Should crank up. Pull your wire to the coil to kill it.

Pull your wire to the coil to kill it.
Unless you want to get blasted by your coil, pull the + lead to the coil. Not the coil wire going to your cap.

I was holding my distributor cap in my hand with all the wires hooked up trying to verify that my rotor was spinning. I had a buddy crank over the car while I watched the rotor. Well, with an MSD box and a Blaster 2 coil, and my knee touching the bumper I got blasted real good. It didn't feel good.

If it has sat for a while pull ALL the plugs, crank it over by hand (socket), and if it rotates freely . Then spin it over with the starter. You want to make sure you have oil in it before it starts(ignition wire disconnected). I would crank it over, with the starter, until the "oil" light goes out. Once the oil lite is out crank her over and see if she will start.

This eliminates the chance you will starve the engine for oil or have water in the combustion chamber (ask me how I know that one!).
