Hi, I have 2 temp senders. I don't remember what cars I took them out of (definately GM though). I want to use one of them for the temp idiot light in my chevelle. The wire is there, on the driver side. How do I know if one of these will make my light work? I put them in water and heated them up, but they both seemed to have a variable resistance. One was like 1.5M ohm to 200k ohm, dropping as it warmed up. The other one was about a third the values, and also dropped while heating. Are idiot light sensors just open or closed? Are the ones that I have for factory guages not lights? Thanks!

You can test them in heated oil. Be very carefull when warming the oil. Use a good thermometer and stirr well. Stop at some 150 Celsius. The switch for the idiot light closes near 130 Celsius and opens again at 110.

I put mine in the drivers side head between nrs 1 and 3 sparkplug.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys! I'm sure the ones i had were from cars with guages. I'm gonna get the right sensor tomorrow. They are a whopping $9, and take a day to get. Then into the head it goes!
