Driviing around last night my temp guage started to jump all over. Cold hot just jittering all over. I assume there must be a bad contact. any suggestions where to start looking. Thanks for any suggestions. Guages are original.

Well, here's where the wiring goes:
For 12V -
The water temp switch on the block.
The bulkhead connector.
The ignition switch.
The temperature indicator.
For Ground -
A tie in terminal, probably under the dash.

The wire coming from the temp sending unit is the ground side of your temp gauge. The sending unit varies in resistance as the temperature changes. Sounds like you don't have a solid connection going to your sending unit. I would check and make sure there are no bare spots in the wire that could be touching ground, and make sure the connection at the sender is tight!! Also check the +12 volts side of the gauge and make sure you've got a good connection.
Check your wiring as Mike said for bad connections, also if you take the wire off of the sender and ground it out the gauge should go all the way to the hot end of the scale on the gauge. You could also have a flakie sender on the way out.
