Under the carpet would be easier, if you can hide it pretty good. Only thing is if it ever needed to be replaced. It could last forever but ya never know.It would also be hard to inspect for rubbing etc.Either way, I guess you could protect it to prevent that.

Question...Would you install your cable under the car. Or under the carpet of your car...and WHY!!!
