always had a extra 12 bolt laying around. well, traded my past differential for a 350x three wheeler. So I can replace it with a 4.56 posi and a new set of 4.10s. I don't have a project to put them in, dont need it for my cars, but feel like I should get it just for general purposes. if I wasn't buying a new set of plastics for tje new trike $400 and a new seat kit for my old 185s trike ($160) I wouldn't hesitate. jim

Of course you "need" it ! Why would anyone NOT have and extra engine, rear or trans (and all their components) laying around? Put a gear in it you don't have and would like to try. Swap a rear in like and hr.

And if that's not enough, I think everyone should remember that when you do need one, we will all remember this post and charge you extra ! Call it a Jim storage fee.

Just looking out for your "needs".

if it was a 4.10, 3.73 or something in the 3 series I could just bolt in, it would be different. 4.56 gears and a wide ratio muncie, id be leaving in 2nd gear. jim

Sounds like you have a good plan to me. My only concern, if it was me, is that I may change my mind on what I want for a ratio by the time I might want to use it. I've already sent back my Yukon posi for a Tru Track, and my gears for a 4.11. of course, I buy parts and they sit a good while, then my mind changes someplace down the road. That would be my only concern.

problem is, I don't have any use for it, I was just looking at it as a spare. the 4.56 is kind of a deal killer, new gears included, but having it swapped out just adds cost to a part I just want as a back up. I decided I'm just going to pass. a stack of dollars takes up so much less space. jim

he's just cleaning the shed and getting rid the last of his 12 bolts. He's got built rears in all his other cars.

A pile of dollar bills is worth less and less every day due to inflation.

Can that be said for that rear? Or, will it one day be worth more than you paid?

For what it's worth, I'd prefer hanging on to the rear.

we were having this discussion about value of parts. He sells alot of parts and stuff for these old cars just aren't selling as good as they used to. I had a 3.31 12 bolt with a lock right, I tried asking $1200 for it and never got a single call. this was a rear that didn't need a rebuild. just bolt in and go.

I keep nothing. Every part on the floor is money that could be something better that could have been in the car. I'm past the point of having conversation pieces around the garage.

2.56 first gear and 4.56 rear gear at 50 MPH puts you at 7000 rpm give or take.
I am taking off in first gear.
I like having spare gears I have a 9" Ford in my stuff but if I had a complete rear end it would take less time to swap that than swapping gears.
I swap gears often.
Father-in-Law did the whole spare rearend deal took us 45 minutes and the car was back on the ground ready to race with the race gears.

If you do not like doing that then forget that rearend.
Unless you get it really cheap.
75 bucks is what I give for the 9" fords and have got them for less.
Complete with brakes and all.. not gutted

you guys all failed me! buddy texted me, again before he listed the rear for sale, and I decided it's only money, the rear was a 71 c f c code so originally born with 3.31s, now it's got a 174 posi with 4.56 gears, also included was a choice of 4.10 or 3.90 gears new in box. so I picked the 3.90s. can't feel any play, no leaky seals. housings all painted or powdercoated. Cost me 1000 bucks, but its something I can use, sell or trade in the future. not my best deal, but these things don't come up for sale too often lately. jim

Jim, if you're trying to get talked out of buying Chevelle parts, this is the wrong place. I'd have bought it too. Now the next time another Chevelle or El Camino project car comes up, you'll have to buy it so you can use the rear you already have.

Same here, I would have snapped that right up for that price.

2 years ago I bought a 70 el camino some genius decided to install a 9 inch with ladder bars and a pan hard bar. But instead of centering the rear in the wheelwell, moved it forward so the stock driveshaft would work. I needed a rear for that thing, couldn't find a free 10 bolt so I traded my same bud the 9 inch, ladder bars and 500 bucks for a 4.10 posi 12 bolt. I already had a rebuilt 3.31 posi but didn't want to stick it in a car I planned on selling anyway.
So when I get tired of my 350x three wheeler.ill be posting it up for trade. maybe there's another el camino in the cards. 4.56 posi, M21, 396, centerline auto drags, got all the expensive parts covered. jim
