Have you considered going to a junk yard (if they still exist) and buying one of the aluminized heat shields off a wreck? That is if they will even let you look around, etc.

When I installed my exhaust I was real close to hitting on the corners. I removed about a inch from the tailpipe where it pushes into the muffler to get more clearance. If it is touching a heat shield will do no good as they need an air gap to work. Maybe a ceramic cloth with help stop the heat transfer. I would be worried about the pipe rubbing through the tank. Also the tank has been hit, is it possible it has been pushed back by bending the straps?

I shortened up the tailpipe by about 2 inches where it connected into the over the axle portion of the tailpipe...problem resolved.
