Hello, I am having issues with my 1969 Chevelle SS. My tachometer is malfunctioning after short run times. The issue is that the tachometer works then stops working then once again seems to be fine. This occurs all while driving a short distance. (couple miles). Then it just completely stops working.

Should I look for a connection problem or ground problem?
All other instruments in the cluster are working just fine. Only the Tachometer is the issue.

Has this issue occurred to any other user?
Are their any links to this issue?

Thanks you,

Is this an unrestored original ? Points ignition system?

The first step is to verify good clean/tight connections at the rear of the dash guage cluster and at the coil (-).

If the connections are good and it is original, time to have it professionally restored. The small internal circuit board assembly in these is notorious for intermittent solder connections and resistors that drift out of tolerance affecting operation and accuracy.

I had a similar issue with my 66' knee-knocker tach. After several attempts at reseating the casing (grounded via dash), checking-rechecking the wiring, I finally gave up. Sent it to RedLine Gauge and Clock Repair. They got it back to working order and even cleaned up the face and repainted the faded orange/red markers. Might run around $200, but at least you keep your original tach...

Hello Joe, The tach cluster was restored approx. 120 miles ago & the car still retains the point system. I just checked the cluster & the coil connections &they are fine. I started the car & the tach works. I'll drive the car again & see what happens. Thanks for the info. Rocco
