I was going to put a tach in my 72 Malibu but someone told me since I have an HEI and MSD ignition i needed some type of module to install with the tach. He said it was around $40. He also said Auto Meter tachs did not need it. Does anyone know if this is true?

If you have an HEI distributor, and something like an MSD 6AL ignition box, then yes, the tach wire on an Autometer unit will plug right into the side of the MSD box in a dedicated spot. The instruction book that came with the MSD should show a diagram for this. If you don't have it, visit for on-line wiring diagrams. In short, I've always had good luck combining Autometer tachs with MSD boxes, no modules necessary that I know of...
