The tach does not work in my 71. I have traced the wire to the coil and it is hooked up. Would the next step be to buy a new tach or would you check something else first??? (circuit board?)

I don't think the tach gets anything from the printed circuit. Have you tested the wire to see if it's broken?

The tach gets 12V from the printed circuit and ground through the gauge housing. You did not state what kind of distributor you have. If you have the original point distributor the tach should work. If you have HEI or some other aftermarket distributor the factory tach may or may not work. There are some tach filters available.
The most common cause I have found for a factory tach to not work is bad or broken contact for the circuit on the tach. Vibration tends to pull the terminals off the board and break connections.

Make sure the tach wire is hooked to the - side of the coil. As for HEI, my tach worked fine when I did the conversion on my '70 model.
