AS old age overtakes any sense I have left I want to change my turbo 400 to a 4 speed. Got a line on a Super T-10. Will this hold up to a 468 that will smoke the tires at a 20 mph roll.. 1970 Chevelle 454 +.60 9.7cr 781s with 2.19 1.88 valves C.C.262 hydrolic flat tappet cam Headman elite headers 3.55 posi 12 bolt Car is heavy with A/C ,power windows and 230 lbs of me. What should I look at to see (numbers) if it (T-10) will hold up.
I probably will never take it to the track but making the tires smoke makes me feel good. After 9 Corvetts I can honestly say that this is the fastest car I ever owned Help me.
P,S. I installed the ceramic headers on a new motor= no problem
Comp Cam = no problem

you would probably get by with the t-10 if you aren't just brutal to it. but most anyone would say a muncie is stronger so why not hold out for one? they're out there, i don't want to say plentiful, but available. usually $250 for a 'core' trans. my trans guy will sell them for $800 rebuilt when he has them. if you do run accross a muncie you want the large 1" diameter counter shaft, not the 7/8" which was basically the muncies from '63-64, the first two years that made 'em.
incidentally, you can get a brand new super t-10 from jegs for around $1300.

A '74 to '80/81 Super T10 would be just as likely to break as a Muncie in your application. A T10 is a different story. Also, there are Super T10's with cast iron cases, which are supposed to be stronger (and heavier) than the aluminum case version.

I've NEVER seen a Muncie in "rebuildable" condition for $250 ... if it's a muncie, the sellers in my neck of the woods are usually "very proud" of them ... which is why I've got a Super T10.

IMO, the Muncie vs. Super T10 issue seems to be about the same as the Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge thing.

Then it should last forever. Traction/dead hooking is what kills the driveline components. If you use street tires on the street and just send them up in smoke, you will not break the trans.

We've beat on our similarly equipped 455 Lemans for two summers now with no ill effects. Lack of traction definitely makes it easier on the drive train. You won't win many races though. I don't know if it is typical, but the Muncie in our Chevelle shifts some what smoother than the Super T10 that we have in the Lemans. The 2.64-1 low gear is nice on the street.

I have two on the shelf just in case my 67 deceides to hook but if no hook it will live. i don't believe the Muncie is stronger than a st-10 but definitley more pricey. My st-10's are going behind a 630 hp 502. Ralph

Iron case, iron midplate, ST-10 is as good as you can get without going to the high rent stuff. I would hunt around for a 2.64 low with your gear ratio. Whatever you do don't get one of the 3.42 low boxes. Aside from being the weakest the 1st gear ratio is useless with a BB and 3.55 gears.

He really knows his stuff when it comes to manual transmissions. The only thing they do is performance rebuilds on manual transmissions. They do excellent work. I have heard that they are one of the best around for manual transmissions.

They built me a Super T-10 with a nodular iron main case, nodular iron mid-plate, 2.64 low gear, 9310 nickel gears and special syncros for better durability and shifting.
