Do you think I would be stupid to drill my fenders for SS & 454 emblems based on the AIM without actually having the emblems in hand? My painter is getting real close to being ready to spray and i dont have the emblems yet.

Measure twice, cut/drill once. Kind of hard to measure the emblem until you have it in hand. It is not inconceivable that a reproduction emblem would be slightly different than the measurements in the AIM.

 Don't drill holes at all: My bodyman likes to cut the posts off the rear of the emblems and substitute automotive grade double back tape (just like current factory installs). If it's wrong (like getting the S upside down) there are no oops holes to fill. I've never had any problems with the emblems coming off. It's a win-win.

I have a fender emblem template for 70-72 and 69 SS cars that I use. Drill an 1/8" pilot holes using the template, then use a small round file to tailor the holes to the emblem. Works great! Also do it BEFORE the car is painted if possible.

Yup.And I'll add again some 3m strip caulk on the studs before you tork em.

My car is a clone....back in 1994 when we painted it the first time, we just cut the posts off the emblems and used 3m emblem adhesive...the yellow gorilla snot stuff. We had to tape them in place overnight but it held. Those emblems were still stuck when I took the car apart in 2009

I placed masking tape on my fender and then measured it out per the assy manual. Came out perfect. That being said, I would now do as Bruce said and stick them on.

Sticking them on has its drawbacks also. The big one is you can tell the difference which for me is all the difference that needed. If you have old emblems you can cut the tabs off and locate it easily and step back and look from different angles before marking your holes. I've been off before and it sucked to fix so I start with one hole then check how all the studs line up. Then mark the rest. An extremely sharp punch with a light tap to mark so the panel doesn't bend and new drill bits.

You could not tell on mine since we used glue and not tape. They stayed on 15 years but when the time came to remove them, it took very little effort with a putty knife to knock em off.
