I don't believe there's any specific #'s involved. Just general ballpark guidelines. Personally, I wouldn't use a stud girdle on any flat-tappet setup, hydro-roller, or "street" solid roller. Just make sure you use good 7/16" studs.

You should always use them on aluminum heads,They will flex trust me.
When a rocker stud breaks at 8500 rpm you will wish the girdle was there to at least try to hold the stud in place.
It's pretty impressive what a rocker arm can do when pinched between another rocker arm and a set of $375.00 valve covers....

Making sure you have the matching valve springs may be the single most important item.As Bob said, girdles are a PITA.

I had 3/8 studs with my solid roller, and I found I was losing valve adjustment. I installed a Moroso stud girdle the one with the U bolts, and it was easier to adjust my valves and they stayed adjusted longer.

When I first started adj. valves with a girdle it was a hassle but for some of reasons already mentioned plus a few more I'm glad I learned to adj. with girdle cause now its a piece of cake! Really! Anything less than 6000 rpm wouldn't use one but on a serious race application with rpm's up to 7000 and above use the girdle!

Warped, on a big block you don't take the girdle off and on cause of the valve angles.

I don't mind adjusting valves with the girdle.

One less thing to worry about, knowing that the stud and rocker are going to stay put.
