steering shaft removal on 69 Chevelle

1940 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  RT
I did this before years ago on another 69 Chevelle, but I can't remember if I've overlooked something. I've removed the clamp bolt (near the brake booster), sprayed some PB Blaster into the area and disconnected the rag joint, but can't get the spline joint to pull away. I've tapped lightly with a slide puller (didn't want to overdo it) but it won't budge. Does anyone have a tip for getting this apart?
Thanks,
Rich

sglide, thanks for the reply. Once I could see from your post that it just needed more force to separate the shaft from the column, I used a ball joint fork to start the process along with some more PB Blaster. I didn't see enough space to insert two (or even one) open end wrenches though. I also used a flat blade screwdriver to wedge into the split to open it up a bit. A follow up with a few slaps of the slide hammer and it was off.
Thanks,
Rich
