Steering Box - is it the same?

2376 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Tom Lasater
Year One has their sweet little rebuilt steering box ("using IROC internals") with 2.5 turns lock to lock. While browsing through some old posts and doing some other reading, it looks like GM used the same box for a VERY long time and that I could just bolt one in from a 77 Camaro (metric after that). So I looked up getting one from an auto parts store for a 77 Camaro Z28 and it says it's also 2.5 to 3 turns for over $100 less than the one at Year One.

So finally my question, is there a difference?

The IROC box will be 12.7 to one ratio and less than 3 turns will shorten the spindle travel on a Chevelle causing less turning radius. The 77 Camaro unit will be 14.4 to one ratio and also have internal stops. Go to my site and read what I have discovered so far. Also check out jimmy's site for more info. There are bolt in boxes that can be bought from local sources for less money than the specialty suppliers that will help with ratio and feel. If you want a 12.7 ratio and use stock hoses you don't have pay the large dollars to those that sell them. It is easy to change the fitting on the back of the pump so you can use the "o" ring style hose and order a box for a Monte SS or Buick GN from 85-87.

My car has a 79 Z28 steering box from the Junkyard(got it for free for helping a buddy
). Bolted right on, except I used the chevelle pitman arm. 2.5-2.75 turns lock-to-lock.

I have access to a 76&79 Trans am.Do I understand them to have the 14.4 ratio's?
Also access to a 84 monte carlo v8?
Which would be the best choice with the least amount of hassles?
Where are the stops located that need to be removed?

Check out Harry's. He charges $165 plus

Don't even think about getting Year One's box, QF48. I just took one back this past weekend. It was the second one I tried, and both had poor center steering characteristics. They were tight, but had oversteer and wandered too much.

Because I had turned in my original box as a core, I had to go get a junkyard gear just to try something else. I got one from a 77 Firebird for $50 and it bolted right up. Works pretty well compared to the other ones from Year One.

I was hoping for the same response in this gear I get from my 78 Trans Am with WS6, but it's not as good. It may be the car itself.

I have the caster set at 1 degree over the spec limit, on the positive side, but would like more if would help keep the wheels more centered. The spec calls for +1/2 minus or plus 1/2. How much further could/should I go?

Anyway, just my 2 cents....not worth the $279 I spent. I will watch for my credit card to be credited!
David, they need to credit you for the amount of the core also. That is SOP when you trade one and then get a refund.
Will second Tom's opinion of Harry's. Great box.

Thanks Rick! It's me, you, and FATCAT diggin' Harry's gearboxes! They do a super job for the money. Each box is flow tested before it leaves their shop..no guessing!
