I had an issue with my starter awhile back, where it spun out of control and smoked, so I took the starter off and got it rebuilt, and since then I am having an intermittent problem where I only get a click, if I hit the key enough times, it eventually starts. I have cleaned up the ground where I have it bolted to the block, down by the fuel pump, I replaced both battery cables, and today I changed the ignition switch on the steering column, and nothing seems to fix it. After each change it seemed find a few times then its right back to clicking.
Anyone have any other ideas? I am getting so frustrated.

Dan,

how old is the battery? I've had that issue before with my 70. Also, there is a switch on the base of the steering column that is adjustable in tune with the key lock cylinder. It's possible it have have loosened up a little and moved. If you look on top of the column near the firewall, you will see it. It has a silver rod going into it. Try playing around with the adjustment on that to see if it corrects the problems.

Battery is a few years old, its an optima red top but I switched with the battery out of my truck and it did the same thing.

I replaced that switch on the steering column.

I am wondering if the rebuilt starter is acting up, they replaced the solenoid, its real annoying sometimes it might click one or 2 times, sometimes it takes awhile to get it to actually start. I am going to double check all my connections are tight and maybe pull the starter back off and get it tested.
