My 69' Chevelle starter has sounded weird since I bought it several months ago. Almost like it's not fully engaging. While it starts, it still sounds unstable. Today (at O'Reilly's....where else?) it just spun without engaging. Engaged on the second try w/ no problem. I wonder if this is the wrong starter.....needs a shim....the gear is hanging up and needs to be lubed? The engine is new and the flywheel has been re-surfaced. May be just a bad starter....hmmmm

it sound like u way have a falty throw out in the starter causeing the gear on the starter not to go out and engage the flyweel. i have also had problems with a starter in the past that didnt bolt completly flush causeing it to not engage correctly.

Also, if you haven't already..... go to a Chevy dealer and invest in REAL starter bolts. They have special shoulders that position the starter in the correct location. The bolts are just under $10 per pair......
