When your starting your chevelle is it normal that after a random amount of time it stops trying to start and instead sounds like the starter is free spinning? I usually never get above 3 seconds of constant engine turnover. If this is a problem is there a way to fix it? Thank you.

Fairly common problem of the starter drive going bad.

Replacing a worn starter drive is a pretty easy job.
