i have a 1969 ss396 with a 1971 402 (CLB block) the teeth on the starter have been chewed up twice! i have replaced the flexplate and starter and the same thing happened. it appears the teeth are only hitting the first half of the flexplate.
(TH400) any thoughts??????
thanks

Only ever saw this happen with either a bent/warped flywheel, starter bendix not fully engaging on its own (getting weak), or either loose starter bolts (poss wrong unshouldered bolts), or just the cursed starter torque mis-aligning when cranking (needing a brace).

I'd bet on the starter mounting bolts. I had this problem and new bolts solved it. Seems unlikely, doesn't it? Worked for me, though.
