I read in Paul A. Hurd's book "Chevelle SS Restoration Guide" that the SS side stripe was not available on the elcamino SS... Yet this stripe can be seen on hundreds of caminos nationwide, and is available in every vendor catalog. I was just wondering if this guy is right or not... Personally i think he's wrong and that it WAS indeed available from GM, and also think this book is filled with a ton of misinformation. By the way... Does anyone have this book? Whats the deal with the 4 spoke oldmobile steering wheel in the 70 SS on page 156? Pretty bad for a book thats supposed to be a "restoration guide".

We've discussed that book here before. It is known to be FULL of errors.

My GM documentation (the '69 option totals report) shows that the D96 side stripe WAS available on '69 El Caminos.

Joey B -- glad you brought this up!

Dan (and/or other TC members),

I assume that statement includes the SS El Camino's also? My brother's '69 El Camino SS "should" have them per the dealer order sheet he has in his posession. The car has since been repainted the original yellow color, however it does not have the side stripes. Also, should the tailgate also have a blacked out area between any moldings? His currently does not, however, I am led to believe that the SS's had that area blacked out. Any answers to this greatly appreciated.

P.S. What about stripes on the hood? Were they available for the '69 SS's? His car does not have them, but he would also like to have them.

Yes, I was talking mostly about the '69 SS El Caminos. It is hard to tell for sure from the GM records, but it looks like you could get the side stripes on any "Custom" model El Camino - SS or not.

We've discussed '68-'69 hood stripes before. I'm certain that none were ever applied at the factory. Some my have been added by dealers and owners after people saw what they looked like on a '70.

And yes, the area between the tailgate moldings should ALWAYS be semi gloss black on an SS el camino. The filler panel between the front bumper and the grill should also be painted semi gloss black. As to the D96 side stripe on an ElCamino custom, thats news to me, i've NEVER seen it on anything but an SS... anyone have a window sticker or buildsheet of a non SS camino having these originally? I dont think you could get this stripe on a Malibu or 300 without the SS package, so i highly doubt you could get it on a non SS camino either... I guess there could always be the rare exception... anyone know of any, cause i don't.

His El Camino SS was repainted and I guess someone decided to NOT paint that area black. In fact, I believe the moldings are not there either. The holes for the clips were filled in or a tailgate from a non-SS El Camino was used as a replacement.

I'll inform him of the lack of factory applied hood stripes on the 69's and that he should have his tailgate painted with semi-gloss black between the moldings.

Thanks for the info! As far as Herd's book, no comment...(I've already provided them and learned of other problems with it in previous postings at this site).
