I have a 72 chevelle sweep speedo. I can reach my hand up from underneath, but the cable goes thru what feels like a hole in something. I cant get my hand to the clip to let it loose. I have the dash pad removed, and no go from the top.
I just put a new dash insert in my sweep dash. When I went to take off the old speedometer cable I had the same problem. I went in thru the top with the dash pad removed. When I pushed in on the clip I couldn't get the cable to release. I was removing the whole dash anyways and when I pulled it forward a couple of inches it came right off. I almost think the way the cable comes up thru the dash it has some side pressure on it which makes it harder to get released.
Man this has me frustrated! I am pretty good usually working on stuff. I can get at the cable from underneath, but there is a metal frame or something. I can only stick a finger in there and can feel where the metal on the cable starts where it would attach to the speedometer. I cant get my finger in enough to feel the clip. From up top, I removed dash pad, and a cover to the topof the speedometer where the lights for it are. But still cant get in to get cable.
Save yourself any more grief. Loosen the entire dash; There are 6 maybe 8 bolts that need to be loosened. You don't need to loosen any wiring, cables, etc., Loose so you can pull the dash forward a bit. I have looooooong skinny arms - perfect for reaching into tight places. Spent 2 or 3 days trying to get the cable from above and below. Finally bit the bullet and loosened the dash. Piece of cake then. BTW~ - you will also need to remove the 4 bolts holding the steering column to the dash. Again no need to remove column wiring - pull the bolts and let the steering wheel rest on your seat. It is REALLY NOT that difficult.
